Why Attend Treks?

In order to develop character, citizenship, and personal fitness, young people need the opportunity to push past their comfort zones in real world settings that help them understand who they are and envision who they can become. High adventure programs provide crucial experiences that help young people clarify their values, goals and vision for the future.

Rugged exploration has long been a deeply entrenched tradition in West Virginia and from that, the ATV has developed as an important West Virginia tool for both work and recreation. While ATVs may seem like a simple vehicle to operate, they require significant skill and stamina to operate safely. This course brings back that feeling of rugged exploration while teaching you to safely drive an ATV through the wilderness.

On top of safe operation, you will also learn basic mechanic skills to keep your ATV running on the trail and get hands-on practice with techniques to get through various terrain and conquering obstacles. This is 50+ miles of ATV travel from one beautiful location to the next all while stopping at vistas, natural landmarks and teachable moments. Trails will generally be easy to intermediate in difficulty and include a mixture of technical features, wide open sections and lots of mud. We invite you to come enjoy an ATV experience through the back-woods terrain of the Summit Bechtel Reserve.

Health & Safety Details

The Summit is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our participants. Activities at the Summit require a certain level of fitness, and some can be very physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding. The programs can include mountain biking, BMX biking, skateboarding, rock climbing, zip lines, challenge courses, shooting, archery, whitewater rafting, and kayaking. Depending on the program(s) you select, you will need to arrive at the Summit physically prepared to participate in those activities. The average walk is 5–7 miles a day on uneven terrain with significant changes in elevation. The heat index often reaches almost 100 degrees in the summer. Be prepared!

Required Medical Form

All youth and adult participants must undergo a medical evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider within twelve months prior to their Summit program.

IMPORTANT: Failure to properly review all information on the Summit AHMR and Risk Advisory could result in your denial of participation upon arrival at the Summit.

Can I have an exception for my weight? I’m only 5-10 pounds from the limit.

No, these requirements are set by the manufacturer and safety policy and cannot be exempted.

Campsites change almost every night. All sites have 10×12 wall tent with cots provided and you share with your crew.

Backpacking chairs are great!  any chair designed for trekking.

The whole crew must go through the ASI course together. It is great practice for you to do it again!

Trail riding requires physical conditioning. Leg and stamina training are recommended.

Our awesome staff will transport your gear between campsites. You are only required to wear a daypack.

Machine selection is based strictly from body weight and size. 450s are typically only offered to anyone over 215lbs. This is for your safety to control the center of gravity while you ride.
